My Daughter’s First Birthday (Part 1)

Today I…compiled all of my pictures (finally) to share with you my lovely readers. It was an amazing birthday party, so much fun to plan and I had so much fun throwing it!

First..a couple pictures from her ACTUAL birthday. We celebrated with just us 3, an intimate family dinner and some macarons. (Mmm!) We were really adamant on keeping her away from any desserts until her 1st birthday. I was pretty shocked how disciplined we were. Nonetheless, she was IN LOVE with the macaron (vanilla flavored) we gave her.

Check out her cutsie outfit her DAD picked out! Good job babe! (And, he even combed her hair for the photos!)

We sang Happy Birthday and tried to teach her how to blow out her candles..haha..that was unsuccessful. She likes blowing fake candles though!

And then…it got messy!

It’s 2013 and she’s crawling!!!

crawlingHey guys! It’s been quite the adventure running after this little one. She’s crawling everywhere and using everything in sight to help herself stand up! I knew this time was coming..and now it’s here! I’m excited, but I’m also a little nervous! What if I take my eye off of her and she hurts herself in that one second that I’m not looking? What if she grabs something on top of a table that I forgot was there? Ugh! Time to baby proof my parents house. Right now we are using pillows to block her from getting into things, but she’s already outsmarted us and now we need to go buy those gates. Any recommendations on good gates?? We’re definitely going to get the stair one because my parents have a steep set of stairs in the house. I would love to get THIS one, but I don’t know if it’s any good. I have some money left on a gift card at Babies R Us so I might just look into buying one from there. We’ve reached EXCITING TIMES you guys!

DIY: Teething Kit

Today I..thought I’d share a fun teething kit I made for my friend’s baby awhile back. So, just when you thought you were getting the routine down, getting comfortable with having a baby…teething starts and throws everything all off! Ugh, I’m not going to sugar coat it, IT SUCKS! We are still going through it, but it hasn’t been as bad as when it first started. Sheesh! There came a time where I just tried everything..I mean.. EVERYTHING that’s out there in the store. These were just some goodies I would recommend because many of them came in handy during my UGLIEST moments as a mom. :(

Contents of basket:

1. Loads and loads of bibs (I thought I had too many bibs, but when teething started and the drool came pouring out like waterfalls (okay, may be a bit exaggerating)..I couldn’t get enough of them! Some are made very cheap and thin, and to those I say ” No Bueno!” Others are nice and thick and drool friendly..I LOVE LOVE LOVE those. I really like this one that I found at the new CottonOn Baby store in the Del Amo Mall.)

2. Hyland’s Teething Gel (A little dab of this gel goes a LONG way. My daughter doesn’t really like the taste of this too much, but it really does soothe her gums and provide some relief for a few minutes.)

3. Teether/Teething Toys (There are so many different kinds of teethers out there. Some moms have recommended this teether ball, others the teether pacifier, but it really depends on your child. See which one works best for him/her simply by trying them out…that’s the best advice I can give. My daughter’s not too fond of those teething toys for some reason..so I’ve strayed away from buying them already.)

4. Baby Orajel (This is another good one..I believe it comes in a fruit flavor which sounds YUM!)

*NOT PICTURED: They also have Teething Tablets which you dissolve in water, but I didn’t find much success with those. They are said to be more natural though.

10 Tips for Traveling with an Infant

1. I took my daughter when she was about a month old. We did just fine without purchasing a seat, in fact, I think most people would prefer to seat their child in their laps. In case you do need to purchase a seat, airlines usually will provide car seats/child safety seats if you decide not to bring yours. Check their websites for more info.

2. I was most nervous about this part for some reason, but in actuality, it was the easiest part! It took less than 5 minutes. Once they verified my daughter’s age at check-in, they printed her boarding pass and we were set to go!

3. I definitely couldn’t have done it smoothly without my Ergo!

4. Traveling by yourself is definitely possible! Trust me, I have a friend who mastered traveling with an infant & actually gave me tips that helped me along the way. Luckily, I had my brother with me, so he was a BIG help!

5 . Recently, I discovered that Babies R Us sells car seat covers for traveling! Genius!

6. I am always a light packer, but I couldn’t have imagined having another luggage with me. All my belongings were combined in the baby bag, and that became my purse for the weekend. I felt it would be too much to have luggage, baby, baby bag, and purse..so I suggest to simplify as much as possible! I would also bring some Tylenol just in case (for emergency ear infections and ear aches)

7. I did ask the passenger in my row if he minded if I changed her diaper, and he said not at all. I don’t think people would mind, but just a heads up might be common courtesy. :)

8. I lied above. This was what I was MOST nervous about..my daughter being one of “THOSE” babies who cries and screams the entire flight. Ugh, sorry, but that’s annoying. I think I just got lucky because she only cried a little bit, and it wasn’t that loud. Phew!

9. I think I really just lucked out with this one. I didn’t really plan ahead in this matter, but my flight just happened to be perfectly in tuned with her nap schedule. Again, phew! God loves me.

10. Good Luck! Oh, before I leave for the weekend..how’s about a sweet little good bye from my little Ave when she was at her first airport. ;)

P.S. Thanks Tracy for hooking me up with the free Chevron templates I used in the background. :)

Dissolving the Daycare Dilemma

Hi! My name is Meghan and I’m the Mommy at RatnamResidence. Melinda has graciously invited me to guest post (my first!) here at Todayi. Thanks, Melinda…and here we go…

Choosing a day care provider is a daunting task for new parents.  The first time around it was overwhelming, to say the least.  I didn’t know where to start, what to expect, and how to go about making such an important decision

The second time around, we’ve got a handle on things…and we didn’t have to wait until our second child to perfect this process.  Our son, Avery’s, daycare informed us they were closing – in less than 3 weeks!  We put on our thinking caps and running shoes and within a week, we had him enrolled in a new daycare.  Call it a blessing in disguise, because we are thrilled about this new daycare and can’t wait for him to start!

So, how did we go from no daycare to the perfect daycare… in just a week?!  A little luck, yes.  A dash of good timing?  Yup.  Add two devoted parents, and it was a recipe for success!  After going thru this TWO times before our son turned 10 months, we’ve perfected the process…

#1 Start Early!

clock

What scared me most about finding a new daycare, was finding one in time.  Some places have year long waiting lists (seriously!) – which is why I freaked when we had only 3 weeks to find a new one.  After sitting down that night with my husband, Vinay, (and a bottle of wine) we decided to hit the ground running the next morning and exhaust all possibilities to make this happen…

#3 Look Everywhere!

Google-Search

But before the night was over, I had my first opportunity to start getting the word out.  I saw my neighbor and gave it a shot in the dark.  That resulted in one post-it with a name and number.  The next morning between conference calls and working, I googled my heart out – sent emails to all possible places, made some calls, and told everyone I saw at work.  Another shot in the dark, but my coworker forwarded the message along to his daughters and the next day they had a name and number for me too.

#3 Narrow Down Your Results

With our limited window to find a daycare fast, we had to narrow down all places we found.  How?  We used these factors:

check-list-board

  • Type: nanny, in-home daycare, center/facility
  • Location
  • Tuition Cost
  • Hours
  • Staff/Child ratio

These factors quickly knocked a few off the list because they are available on a website or can be answered with a quick phone call.  Most places are super-pricey… so they were off the list (Sorry, I’m not paying $2,000 a month for childcare!)  The closer the place is to our home and commute route, the more appealing because Avery doesn’t care for car rides and the longer the ride, the more crying and squirming from the back seat.  We had to make sure they were open early enough for drop off, and open late enough for pick up – This wasn’t a big issue because we were planning for Vinay to do drop off after I head to work, and I’ll pick up before Vinay’s day is over.  And with that, we were down to two potentials… both of which were the shots in the dark to my coworker and neighbor!

#4 Visit Potentials, and Ask Questions!

ask questions

This is where I have to add the most important thing I learned during this process – don’t knock it before you try it!  We thought we wanted an in-home daycare, but after touring one in-home and one center, I knew I liked the center MUCH more.

When we toured the in-home daycare, we liked the ‘gram & gramp’ type couple that ran it, the homey feeling, the location – 5 minutes from home, was financially possible, and hours met our needs.  However, we didn’t like the lack of safety… there were no safety gates or locks on cabinets and there were two infants starting in the fall in addition to the 6 kiddos there already were, so how much attention would Avery get?

The tour of the center was awesome.  Although the number of children was 45, there was 1 teacher (early childhood education) and 1 assistant per room (6-8 kiddos), so we knew Avery would get tons of attention.  The hours and location met our needs.  The price was a little more than the in-home daycare, but not out of our price range.  And what impressed us the most was the curriculum based around play, the enthusiastic staff, big outdoor playground, safety gates and locks on everything!  I loved the idea that Avery would be learning, not just being watched.

After our tour we were practically decided on the center.  But I still followed up with references…

#5 Call References

telephone

I was given 3 numbers.  I called all three and got rave reviews.  One mom told me “I give (center name) almost full credit for my kids knowing their ABCs, colors, and shapes”  Another stressed the sense of community and how you meet and get to know all the staff after some time, so when your child switches to a new room, you already know their new teacher.  Making those 3 calls sealed the deal.

#6 Decide & Stay Involved

report-card

After touring the two options Thursday & Friday, we let it sit for the weekend, and on Monday, we were still sure, and thrilled actually, to make the call and reserve the spot!  Now, we’re counting down the days before Avery starts his new daycare.  We know it’ll take some adjusting with pick-up and drop-off and his schedule, but we’re determined to stay involved.  Avery will get ‘report cards’ to note his eating, sleeping, diaper changing thru the day – and we were so impressed with the staff that we know the communication will be great….

And with that, our daycare dilemma was dissolved!

What was the deciding factors that sealed the deal for you when looking for a daycare provider
